美國政府決定加強援助西非對抗伊波拉疫情蔓延的危機，將在賴比瑞亞建立聯合司令部，並派遣3,000名美軍到疫區建設醫療設施。世界衛生組織（WHO）警告，要避免疫情演變成一場人類浩劫，可能得耗費近10億美元。

美國總統歐巴馬16日視察美國疾病管制與預防中心（CDC），並對伊波拉疫情發表聲明。他說：「如果現在無法遏止疫情，我們可能眼睜睜看著成千上萬人感染，無論在經濟、政治還是安全方面，都有重大影響。」

官員表示，新的因應措施包括每周訓練多達500名醫護人員；架設17座健康設備，每處有100個病床；在賴國首都蒙羅維亞成立聯合司令部，協調國際救援事宜；發放醫療器具給各個家庭，包括本周將發給疫區家庭的5萬套醫療器具；挨家挨戶宣傳，教當地人民如何處理病患。

美國已承諾提供超過1.75億美元的援助，接下來還計劃加碼5.88億美元。美國一直透過派遣專家與提供物資來遏止病情擴大，美國國家衛生研究所則提供尚在動物試驗階段的新藥，另還要求追加預算，希望加速開發新藥和疫苗。

各國也將加快援助腳步。聯合國安理會將於18日召開緊急會議，與國際社會商討因應方式，美國駐聯合國大使鮑爾說，在安理會當中討論公共衛生議題十分罕見。

西非伊波拉病毒疫情3月爆發以來，感染者累計達5,784人，死亡人數超過2,400人。目前疫情最嚴重為賴比瑞亞、獅子山和幾內亞；奈及利亞、塞內加爾也已經傳出病例。WHO表示，伊波拉病例數接下來可能每隔三周成長一倍。目前5,000多例有一半在過去三周出現，如果計入未確診病例，感染人數可能超過2萬人。
