工具機的定義
以某種動力推動，非手工，而以物理、化學、或其他方式，能成型加工物的機器。
工具機心臟(主軸)；一個軸向能提供旋轉的裝置。
旋轉動作通常使用於工具機的刀具與工件兩者的相對運動或是使用於偏擺量測機台的探針與工件間的相對運動。
對主軸單元的總體要求是保證在一定的負載與轉速下，帶動工件或刀具精確而穩定的繞其軸心線旋轉，並長期保持這種性能。
主軸構造形狀主要決定於軸上安裝的傳動件，軸承等零件類型、數量、位置與安裝方法，為便於裝配常把主軸作為階梯形。
主軸前端(鼻端)懸伸應儘量縮短，其前端形狀已經標準化。
主軸通常為空心，中心孔用於通過刀具拉桿及拉刀機構。(為了通過較粗的拉桿與減輕主軸重量，中心孔常希望大些。但中心孔過大會影響主軸剛性)
