身為本屆世足「身價最低球隊」的哥斯大黎加，在巴西世足D組預賽首戰，以3：1擊敗兩屆世足冠軍烏拉圭，大爆冷門，也打出最大驚喜。

哥斯大黎加全隊球員身價2080萬歐元，阿根廷梅西(Lionel Messi)、葡萄牙C羅 ( Cristiano Ronaldo )或巴西內馬爾 (Neymar)等巨星的身價都是哥國的數倍。梅西身價逾一億歐元，哥斯大黎加只以梅西的五分之一身價拿下世足第一勝，價值連城。
