有些人不一定有伴侶，也有人會選擇不婚。而北京一項研究發現，單身的人，很可能有所謂的「單身基因」。擁有這種基因的人，單身的機率比一般人，高出百分之二十。研究初步分析說，這種「單身基因」，會降低大腦血清素的濃度，使人對親密關係感到不自在。

研究發現，擁有這種「特殊基因」的人，比較難與他人有親密的關係；此外，這樣的人也更容易神經質，或是出現憂鬱症狀。
